The Garden

Gardening in the country, while fun, can be challenging. I realize that ‘are you smarter than a 5th grader’ is great fun to what, being smarter than the deer and other garden beasties is way more challenging. Here in Bath County there is no point in putting anything in the ground until after Mother’s Day and even then you are taking a chance on your hard work freezing. This year our garden spot could not even be disc’d until Memorial Day because of all the rain – not complaining about rain.

Yesterday evening, while I was at a softball game with one daughter, Ronnie planted some of our tomato plants with the other daughter. We do not have an especially big garden; big enough to keep us busy. We finished planting corn, blue lake beans, cucumbers, brocolli and squash today.

We also built our first composting bins! Talk about a cheap date – I’m so excited about composting! My next challenge will be keeping the green to brown ratio in the ‘zone’.
